There has always been a need for local tribes such as the Lily Civilization to be able to distinguish edible, inedible, helpful, and harmful plants. While this need was never refined into a true science on the island itself, it was further refined by the world outside the Island. The modern science of Biology houses the current incarnation of this science, called Botany, and was brought to the Island during the Founding Era. Botany is also sometimes referred to as plant biology or plant science(s), and covers various topics in regards to plantlife such as growth, development, structure, metabolism, and reproduction.

Those that study this branch of science have often taken a interest in it because of the number of plants on the Island of great botanical interest.
