Lasair is a native Yuriban salamander who began appearing in Yuriba in early 2013. She's notable mainly for her cryptic personal style, her leanings towards a wild, almost feral lifestyle, and her tendency to answer questions curiously, and it's not entirely clear if she's teasing or just crazy.

Psychological data
General personality
There are some people who are not easy to pigeonhole into a personality type. And then there's Lasair. While initially she presented to the village as someone civilized if confusing, she has since lapsed to an almost feral lifestyle. Lasair tends to find normal civilized behaviours either inconvenient or difficult to maintain, and she far prefers living out in the forest.
Much like a wildfire, Lasair is unpredictable at times and appears to have a bad temper in some situations. Something as simple as being splashed with water can send her into a thinly-restrained rage. More broadly, she seems more comfortable in small groups than in crowds, and she spends most of her time alone and outdoors. She is most comfortable at night and away from civilization - or asleep. At times there's a wild edge to her, though she seems able to cover it with a veneer of culture that comes across as more learned than natural. Making her somewhat less predictable is that she'll occasionally appear to get chummy with someone while actually harbouring a furious irritation with them - or approach someone on a mocking footing when she actually means well.
Part of the problem with pinning down Lasair's character is that she tends to talk about things from an entirely different perspective. Her speech tends to veer frequently off into metaphor, and now and then she will seem to divorce herself entirely from reality and turn a conversation on its head. She seems to focus unnaturally on butterflies and the boundary between dreams and the waking world, though deciphering her actual views on that seems to be an exercise best left to a few keen natives or the slightly crazed. At some level she appears to enjoy word games and little teases, and she has a habit of producing tarot cards out of nowhere and passing them to people she's speaking to as though to prove her point without having to turn it into a sentence. Occasionally she'll claim an unfondness for words and speech in general. She's also prone to occasional uncomfortable silences where she seems to zone out while looking up to the sky. More often, she tends to enter conversations out of nowhere, often just bounding up out of the trees like a wild animal suddenly appearing, at which point she'll say a few cryptic things and leave on her own.
Sanity
It is not necessarily easy to tell if Lasair has a peculiar insight into Yuriba, or if she's just insane. This is particularly true given her tendency to refer to herself in the past tense. Now and then those who associate with her can ferret out that she considers herself to be both dead and alive at the same time, like some sort of Schrodinger's salamander. Occasionally she will refer to herself as two different people or suggest that there is one Lasair who is dead and another Lasair who is alive. She is also prone to spinning Yuriban beliefs about butterflies off by speaking of moths as their dark counterparts.
Romantic preferences
Trying to decipher what Lasair is into romantically is all but impossible, and she seems in no hurry to share. She does, however, seem to react badly when she's approached on an overtly lewd footing.
Relationships
Lasair tends to assign nicknames to people. Particularly prominent ones are listed.
- Atara/"Winter": Lasair holds a curious kind of fondness for the dragoness's solid nature and good virtue. She seems to hold Atara's motherly traits in great regard. To date she has shared more of her history with this woman than she has with anyone else. She's also more prone to coming down to earth when she speaks with the dragoness, as though her normally semi-comprehensible speech is grounded somewhat when she's talking with her, though she is prone to calling her "winter" and talking about her as though she's the actual season. Her friendship with the woman has blossomed somewhat, to the point she considers herself particularly fond of her.
- Abryn: Lasair seems to enjoy meeting up with the verbose woman and has previously said she likes playing with language with her. It is hard to actually say they share viewpoints because their conversations are invariably baffling and high-concept, usually confusing everyone around them.
- breisleach/"Stormcloud": The perception of a butterfly flitting free through the storm clouds is enough to captivate Lasair's interest in the fox. Her conversations with breisleach tend to be distressingly similar to the ones she has with Abryn, though with less digressions into talk about girls kissing or jumping into bed.
- Angela/"Little Swan": They've only met once, but the angelic woman's leap to the "defense" of Ielle from Lasair's conversation led to a seemingly innocent chain of events that nevertheless left the salamander holding herself back from violence. She seems to count the angel among those she believes beneath her.
- Talmara: A visit to Leona's bar introduced Lasair to this demon-touched woman, who seemed to take her usual manner of speech as flirtatious and planted a kiss on her. Now Lasair isn't sure if she's aggravated by the woman's unsubtlety or amused by it enough to tease her a little more.
- Kenina/"Dipper":
- Rockpath/"Sleeper":
- Ielle: Now and then Lasair crosses paths with this woman, and though it's a fairly surface friendship, she seems to take a particular delight in getting cryptic and a little teasy. She also seems oddly fond of giving Ielle the occasional pat on the butt.
History
Where Lasair comes from is sketchy at best. Her birth was recorded in 1958 by the native priestesses of Harumeku, to a retiring young salamander named Mirailne and her controlling, short-tempered partner, Ary. The two had a rocky relationship at best, and their pregnancy was seen by both as accidental, brought on by a drunken romp one night and a mutual desire to eventually have a second child. What went on in their household is largely unknown, though Lasair evidently had an unhappy childhood and was keenly aware her mothers saw her as an accident. The young girl was raised in a home in which Mirailne genuinely loved her but was too passive and fearful to protect her from Ary, who dominated the relationship to the point of bald-faced abuse. Though Lasair evidently did study under local priestesses of the Lady, she displayed a fearful disposition and a tendency to dissociate and lapse into daydreams at a moment's notice. Beyond that, few friends really remember her.
A local Priestess of Fuyuzora is the last to record her, in roughly 1976. The healer visited Ary and Mirailne's residence only to find Ary with a broken cheekbone, Mirailne and her older daughter packing their things, and Lasair missing entirely, having apparently run away from home.
Around this point, any official records lose track of Lasair entirely. It's likely she ended up leaving Underhill altogether, but where she went is unknown, and Lasair herself tends not to be forthcoming at this point.
She fell off the map completely until 2012, when she simply appeared in Underhill doing random tarot readings with a cryptic bent and exceptional accuracy. Those who remembered her from her youth found that in the 36 years of her absence she had become a different person entirely, carrying herself with an adept confidence and an air of playfulness offset by her tendency to cut through people with keen stares. She also seemed to have lost her ability to speak, at first addressing people only in halting but cryptic sentence fragments but soon quickly rediscovering her ability to construct complicated sentences, which she did in abundance. Her former peers also found a tendency to speak of herself as an ex-person and to claim she was actually dead.
Sometime in 2013 she made her way above the hill.
