Stonelocking

The practice of locking away things of value within solid rock, be it tangible, emotional or intellectual, is referred to as stonelocking. Accessing these rooms or small cubbies is a local secret that has been shrouded in mystery and kept away, for it is believed that only those judged worthy may access a given resource and that doing so is at one's own peril. This isn't always the only way to the treasure within, but is typically the only marked way. The methods have varied with the depth of time, some being literal markings that link to deep in the island's substrata, where others are simply built stone vaults that are designed without exit.

It is believed that the practice of stonelocking began in Lilian times, but may even predate that. Little to nothing is known on how the original structures were created, as the few found seem to be as if they were willed into existence and not carved. It is estimated that the island is littered with little pockets of stonelocked areas, perhaps safe boxes, libraries and even entire enclaves could have used this method to secret away from the surface only to be accessed by those that were true of heart, holding the faith in themselves, the people of the island and the Ladies power that forged the locking.

More modern uses of the same theory have been used, as it provides fair good security against theft or public access to supplies. The town council have used it in a few locations, marking each with a jasper tiled mosaic of Lady Chikyuu's symbol of an eye wrapped in a solid, faceted gemstone, in a semblance to those found on the few known sites.
