Madeline Lane is a young midwestern American, who originally arrived in Yuriba on what she referred to as a 'diplomatic mission'. After an extended absence back home to complete her bachelor's, she has returned to the island, apparently as a permanent resident.
Physical Appearance
Madeline is an albino; due to her condition, she has very pale skin and hair, the latter of which tends towards a riot of white curls. To try and keep some order to it, she's taken to wearing it in braids, wrapped around her head. Her eyes are a pale blue, tending to violet in some lighting. Her condition also caused her to have damaged vision, and she always wears silver wire spectacles. Often, she carries some form of protection from sun.
Beyond her peculiarity, she's a somewhat gangly sort, although solidly average in her body and features. Her clothing preferences lend strongly to to what most would qualify as 'Gothic', although she's moved away from the grunge-influenced heavy layering that she favored in her earlier habitation on the island.
Biography
Madeline grew up in the Midwestern United States; although born in Minnesota, her family moved around frequently between her parents attending graduate school and then moving on to different teaching gigs. She has lived in Minnesota, Ohio, Illinois, and, most recently, Nebraska. Between moving around often and being unusual, she was somewhat strained socially; while hardly maladapted, she can be a bit shy and tends to be more comfortable with adults than children or younger teenagers. However, this isolation and stress is probably what initially drew her towards the goth scene, something that can still be seen as a strong influence on her at times, even if it doesn't really exist on Yuriba.
Having spent a year at the University of Nebraska, Madeline took a hiatus to come to Yuriba, claiming that her diplomatic mission there is a 'family matter' if pressed. From what she admits to, her freshman year was fairly typical, being a mix of academia and gleeful social initiation into alcohol and adult relationships; she came out of it a bit frazzled, but pleased and a bit more sure in herself, something she brought with her to the island. She stayed on the island a bit over two years on whatever matter she arrived under; at the end of it, somewhat withdrawn, she slipped back home, taking the time to finish up her Bachelor's (Medieval Studies, minor in English Lit) before returning to the island. While before she brought only a few clothes and basic necessities, this time, she seems to be seeking out a place where she can fully settle in on her own terms suggesting that this return is on grounds other than her initial, temporary visit.
So far since her return, she's most been staying at the Moonglow Shrine, having made friends, of sorts, with the caretaker Melanie.
Relationships
Madeline has had fairly few significant relationships on Yuriba; in her original visit, she made formal contact with Merin Drazin in her diplomatic role, as well as Juliet. She seemed to only possess a genuine friendship with the latter, getting along amiably with other members of the household such as Mirabelle as well. She had as passing, casual friendship with the journalist Teagan. Romantically, she seems to have held herself in reserve before, likely due to the uncertain length of her time on the island; it's likely this has changed since her return.
