Demihuman

Demihuman is a term used to refer to those whose basic physical appearance is humanoid but includes distinctively non-human elements. These beings may or may not have special, magical, or supernatural abilities, but they are generally a form of true breeding population. Demihumans are, on the genetic level, distinct from humans.

Near human demihumans

Demihumans whose appearance closely parallels that of a standard human are often referred to as near human. Physical differences between these creatures and standard humans are, comparatively, minor. Common examples are additional limbs and changes in structure of physical organs. A typical example of a near human demihuman would be a half-breed catgirl, who would possess an additional limb (a tail) and altered physical structures such as non-humanoid ears. Obviously, this is a fairly broad category; for convenience it could be considered that near human Demihumans are generally one whose facial structure closely resembles that of a normal human.

Far human demihumans

Demihumas whose appearance bears lesser resemblance to a standard human are generally referred to as far human. Quite often their facial structure is altered to include a form of snout; heavy coverings of fur or digitigrade mobility are also common traits. For those whose appearance bears strong traits from a standard non-sentient animal species instincts related to their creature type are typical; these individuals may display distinctly non-human thought processes and reactions.

Those with dominant facial features resembling an animal rather than that of a pure human are often associated with the term furry. The term furry is not exclusive to those of fur; It can refer to anything that may naturally cover the skin such as scales or feathers. In some cases a furry may walk on all fours depending on it's race.

Demihuman origins

True demihumans are naturally occurring species, often native to other planes or worlds. Because of Yuriba's nature as a dimensional nexus, many demihumans come from worlds where they are a common species, contrary to the experience of many human immigrants.

On Yuriba, magic sometimes creates demihumans – or at least what appears to be demihumans. Almost all humans who become demihuman on Yuriba are a result of the magical Jusenkyou Springs. This event is often referred to as being blessed. However, it is important to note that these individuals are not true demihumans; when they have children, the child will always default to the parent's original genotype and memetype. As such, children of two parents with the same Jusenkyou effect are often baptized in the relevant spring shortly after birth.

Known demihuman races in Yuriba

There are many races of demihuman in Yuriba. The list below is far from complete and should be considered only an introduction to some of the most well known types.

• Catgirls are one of the largest groups of demihumans in Yuriba. The Yuriban catgirl population is mixed between true demihuman individuals and those affected by the Maonyanniichuan spring, one of the most popular.
• Kitsune are native to Yuriba; some kitsune have also immigrated to the island in recent times.
• Foxgirls are also seen on Yuriba, both true demihuman immigrants and a number of Hunyanniichuan created individuals.
• Faeries, also known as Fae, are another native race of demihuman.
• Hanyou are often mistakenly included in this classification; they are not true demihumans but rather a hybrid species blending human and youkai ancestry.
• Elves are very similar to humans in appearance but live longer and are distinguished by their pointed ears.
