OOC:Beginner's Guide
(Redirected from Beginner's Guide)This page is intended as an OOC beginner's guide for the new arrival to Shoujoai MUSH, acting as an introduction to some important commands, details of out of character culture and behavior, and finally, a list of some good articles to read to start understanding the in character culture.

Important commands
Communicating with others
These are commands to allow you to interact with others, both in character and out. In character commands are things that happen in the game world, out of character commands are used to communicate between players. In this section, we'll use Lisa_Moonbeam as our example character.
In character communication
To say something, simply type a quotation mark (") followed by what you wish to say. For example, if you were to type:
"Hello everyone!
Then everyone would see:
Lisa_Moonbeam says, "Hello everyone!"
If you want to perform an action, simply type a colon (:) followed by what you want to do. For example, if you were to type:
:waves to everyone.
Everyone would see:
Lisa_Moonbeam waves to everyone.
If you use a semicolon (;) then the first word in your text will be appended directly to your character name. This is useful if you want to do something like:
;'s stomach is heard growling!
Which will show:
Lisa_Moonbeam's stomach is heard growling!
If you want to send a private message in character to another character, you would whisper to them. For example, if Lisa_Moonbeam wants to whisper a greeting to Angeltear, she would type:
whisper angeltear=Good Morning hon!
Which will show Angeltear:
Lisa_Moonbeam whispers: Good Morning hon!
While any other characters in the room will not see anything at all. If you want to whisper to more than one person at once, just include both names before the = sign, separated by a space. (This command can be shortened to just "w" or "wh".)
If you want to write a pose that does not start with your name, you would preface it with the | character. For example, you might write:
|Walking lazily along the beach, right where the waves lap up on the sand,
Lisa_Moonbeam glances up when she sees the sun rising over the horizon, a soft
smile on her face.
It will show, with Lisa_Moonbeam's name colored just like in a regular pose:
Walking lazily along the beach, right where the waves lap up on the sand,
Lisa_Moonbeam glances up when she sees the sun rising over the horizon, a soft
smile on her face.
Out of character communication
If you want to say something out of character so the whole room can see it, simply type OOC followed by what you want to say. For example, if you type:
OOC I'll be right back!
Then everyone else will see:
[OOC] Lisa_Moonbeam says, "I'll be right back!"
You can also do actions OOCly by typing something like:
OOC :waves.
Which will show:
[OOC] Lisa_Moonbeam waves.
You can communicate out of character privately to another character via the page command. Like whisper, it's possible to send this to more than person at once. For example, if you wanted to say hello to Angeltear's player, you could:
page Angeltear=Hi there!
And she would see:
Lisa_Moonbeam (LJ) pages: Hi there!
The part in parentheses is Lisa's alias, which we'll address in the Character detailing section. (This command can be shortened to "p". Also, using the page command without specifying recipient will automatically page the last person paged.)
Mailing
Mailing in game could be both in character and out of character. Mail can be sent to both online and offline characters, and can be stored for a prolonged periods of time in-MUSH, unlike other forms of communication.
To mail someone, you would use the following command:
@mail Angeltear=Hello/Sorry I missed you yesterday, I'll try to catch you tomorrow.
Then Lisa would see:
MAIL: You sent your message to Angeltear.
Angeltear, if she's online, would see:
MAIL: You have a new message (2) from Lisa_Moonbeam.
Note that the number in brackets shows the number of message in Angeltear's mailbox, so she could immediately check on it if she is present. If she was offline when the message was sent, she will see, upon connect:
MAIL: 2 messages in folder 0 [INBOX] (1 unread, 0 cleared).
To check on what's inside your mailbox, use the following command:
It will display something similar to:
--------------------------- MAIL (folder 0) ------------------------------ [-----] 0:1 *Alice What`s for dinner? Tue Feb 20 11:01 [N----] 0:2 Lisa_Moonbeam Hello Sat Feb 24 05:49 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The letter N in the beginning denotes unread message. The second of the two numbers is the message number. (The first is to show the folder number, but most players usually don't have enough mail to need additional folders – therefore, this part of the guide assumes players use only the default folder.)
After those, there is the name of the mail sender (prefaced with *, if the sender is currently online), the mail topic, and the date/time that the mail was sent.
To check on a particular mail message, you would use a command like this:
@mail 2
It will display this:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Lisa_Moonbeam Date: Sat Feb 24 05:49:31 2007 Folder: 0 Message: 2 Status: Unread Subject: Hello ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sorry I missed you yesterday, I`ll try to catch you tomorrow. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unread messages automatically become read upon being displayed in this way.
If a mail message is no longer needed, it can be cleared with:
@mail/clear 2
This will then display the following:
MAIL: Msg #0:2 cleared.
The message will not be deleted immediately, however. Rather, it will be erased after the next time you disconnect. If you want to permanently clear it right away, type:
@mail/purge
Character detailing
In addition to details set in the newbie room such as your description and gender, some additional commands will help further flesh out your character and make things easier.
The first is to set an alias. This is basically a shortened form of your name that others can use instead of typing out your entire name if they want to whisper, page, look at, finger, or otherwise interact with you through commands. In the case of our example, she set her alias by typing:
@alias me=LJ
You can also set a variety of info that will be displayed to other individuals if they use the finger command on you by typing, in the case of our example:
finger Lisa_Moonbeam
Normally, all that is displayed is your name, gender, race, last logout time (if offline), time you've been online (if connected), and location (if you are not set UNFINDABLE). It can be further customized to display a note, background information, your homepage, and the name of a series your character may be derived from. None of this information has to be set – it's all optional. Furthermore, you can set something in your note that will alert you when other people finger you. To set your note, you would type:
¬e me=Hi! Feel free to say hello, I don't bite.
If you also wanted your note to tell you when someone fingered you, you would add the code [pemit(%!, %n just fingered you.)] into your note, like so:
¬e me=Hi! Feel free to say hello, I don't bite. [pemit(%!, %n just fingered you.)]
The others are added the same way (although you'll only want to put the notification in once!), except replacing '¬e' with whichever field you want to fill: background, homepage, or series.
Information commands
To check upon your current surroundings, this command is used:
look
Some words in the room description could be highlighted with magenta color. These can be viewed in more detail. For example, if the word piano is shown in magenta, type:
view piano
To look over someone or something in detail (anything listed under players or objects in current room), type:
look Angeltear
In addition to the MUSH's hardcoded help command, information about locally coded commands can be found by typing:
+help
Another source of some random grab bag information that isn't necessarily appropriate for +help can be find by typing:
guide/list
and then individual topics can be accessed by typing, for example:
guide channels
You can find out where other characters are by typing:
where
and then track down those locations by typing:
+map
OOC culture
The purpose of Yuriba is to provide a place where females who are lesbian can live together with others who are of the same preference without fear of being alienated because of their sexual preference. Furthermore, it's a place based on examining a culture that might exist in an isolated location that had only ever had one gender. Unfortunately, a lot of newcomers to the MUSH don't see that there's a lot more to it than lesbianism, and think of it as a place for having 'cybersex'. While it's certainly possible to do so, advertising the fact that you're there for only that will probably get a negative response from most players and characters – most people are more interested in developing love relationships and friendships.
The truth is that Yuriba is about more than just lesbians living together. It's a whole unique community in itself that has a lot of possibilities available to those within it. If you want to become a resident of Yuriba, here are some basic guidelines to remember:
1. Above all, this is not a place designed to serve those with overactive hormones! If you're looking for cybersex, then this isn't the best place. It's certainly possible, but it's not our main focus, and there are many sexual things you cannot do on grid. If you're really only interested in cybersex, ask OOCly and someone might well be kind enough to point you to a MUSH that is designed for that purpose.
2. Be respectful of other people. If someone's in a private room, then odds are they'd like privacy. If you're unsure whether a room is private or not, it's best to page one of the persons in there to ask them about it. If they say it's private, please respect that. Likewise, it's best not to enter another person's residence without their permission, unless they have a sign or something to that effect stating otherwise.
3. Remember that if you're going to do RP of any sort with someone, it has to be consensual. What this means is if another person is uncomfortable with any type of activity that you might be role-playing with them, then you should stop doing that. If you wish to do something of a sexual nature with another person, it's best to do so in a private setting. If you're not sure what another player's reaction to some sort of RP would be, it's perfectly okay to ask them OOCly and discuss it beforehand. In fact, this will probably even make most people happy.
4. On the topic of sexual activities, while some sexual activity, such as kissing and some touching, is generally allowed in public places, more explicit things should be restricted to private areas.
5. If you're not sure about something, you can always ask on an appropriate chat channel (usually +Assist for admin help, +Idletalk will probably have the most general OOC chatter and info). Just don't repeatedly spam the same thing over and over, as this is very rude.
IC culture
Exactly how you behave IC will often be dependent on whether your character is a native or an immigrant of Yuriba. Most people choose to play an immigrant for their first character, since you don't have to learn a whole new culture in advance. However, if you want to start reading up on native life once you've begun, some good areas to being are:
- Underhill, the region where any natives would originate from.
- Category:Religion, particularly the Animism, Blessing, Goddesses, and Spiral articles to get an overview of the native faith.
- The Jusenkyou Springs article to help understand the magic pools on the island.
- Naming conventions talks about how the native culture uses names.
- Gender perception and Memetic exchange explain how an all female culture views gender and how Yuribans reproduce.
- Polyamory covers the primary relationship model among native Yuribans.
- The Census offers a general overview of the demographics of the island.
- The Climate and Devil's Triangle articles give a basic overview of some of the unusual facets of Yuriban physical geography.
- And finally, Local cuisine is a good guide to what sort of food can be found on the island.
A sort of short summary of native culture and the world can be found in this topic on the shoujoai.com forums.
Where to meet people in character
Now that those are taken care of, here are some of the most common hangout spots where you can meet other people and chat:
- The Village Center
- The Hot Springs
- Leona's Bar and Girl (sic)
Just issue the +map command to see where you are, and how to reach those locations.
