Biography
Tanya was born on the planet Tranquility, a colony of Earth which subsequently declared its independence from the Terran government for a variety of controversial and sometimes contentious reasons. Her mother and father owned a large farm in a rural area of the planet, and her upbringing was fairly typical for a child of her background. Her interests chiefly revolved around football, lacrosse, and swimming, though she also showed an early aptitude for mathematics.
Over time, she soon decided that as much as she enjoyed working with her parents and two siblings--a sister and a brother, both older than herself--on the farm, along with a small army of human and automated assistants, she would prefer to attend university. She soon enrolled in a computer architecture and design program, though she proved to have somewhat poor timing in this, as in her freshman year tensions between Tranquility and Earth broke into open war, and she became one of millions who joined the military, lending her help to the greatly outnumbered Tranquility space navy's defense against Earth's fleets, soon rising to the rank of lieutenant.
Her actual record during the war is not something she tends to discuss very much, though she will occasionally hint that the war did not go at all well for the former colony. It was after an especially crushing defeat, in which her ship suffered severe damage, that she blacked out on her way to a lifeboat. Her next memory was of waking up deep in the Yuriban forest.
Appearance
Tanya will cheerfully admit that she's just "a good old fashioned normal farmgirl," with an unremarkable height and weight, and brown eyes and hair that she keeps cropped in a short pageboy. Her skin is significantly darker than the Yuriban norm, speaking to a good bit of African heritage. Coming as she did to Yuriba with little more than the uniform on her back--strangely, not the survival suit she was wearing at the time of the incident--she has yet to build up a wardrobe. If pressed, though, she will admit to a fondness for denim.
Interests
Her greatest love has always been computer software, but as there is a distinct lack of computers and software in Yuriba, she has begun to busy herself with other things, such as familiarizing herself with her new home and its many quirks. Magic particularly fascinates her, and she tends to regard it with something close to awe. She has taken up a great interest in native music, reading as much as she can about it, though she has yet to be able to manage listening to it.
Relationships
After some initial hesitancy, to determine the norms and possibilities, she has fallen in with Cecily, even to the point of moving in with her at her new residence. She's generally friendly to approach, and eager to learn more about the rest of the population, who she considers quite refreshingly quaint from her own perspective.. She will tend to refuse discussing her love life prior to the island, unless heavily pressed on the subject.
Miscellaneous
Despite her military background, she isn't a particularly martial figure, and is as prone to streaks of laziness as anyone. Also, her way of speaking, sometimes a bit blunt, is nonethless friendly. She prides herself on a firm sense of egalitarianism, and will snap at anything that hints of social class division. While she plays the violin, and quite well as she will admit without boastfulness, she also is adept at the piano, and passably well on the guitar.
She speaks both English and Japanese fluently, though with a slight accent which would indicate the gulf in time between her era and ours was not without some linguistic drift. She also knows some smattering of French and Dutch, or as she likes to say, just enough to embarrass herself.
