Personality

Miyabi is not the daughter of a very privileged life. As such, her mannerisms and tendencies can often lead one to believe she is a little rough around the edges. She speaks informally no matter whom she is addressing, dresses in a manner quite flattering and attention-grabbing, and never seems to find it necessary to sugar-coat her opinion or hold back in speaking her mind. Although she isn't directly confrontational, if someone does something to deserve it, she has quite a mean kick.

Despite this, around other women she is rather shy and quick to blush. She can, rather unexpectedly, lay a flattering compliment out, but mostly she just tries not to stare and attempts to remain on a friendly level with them. Much of this, however, goes right out the window when the topic, or order of the day, changes to her favorite pastime. She has perhaps too much of a liking for adult games with other girls, especially when she is winning. Ironically, however, forceful women or ones that don't know the difference between bad touch and very bad touch are quick to earn her disfavor.

By the time she left Yuriba, Miyabi had become secure and even assertive in her sexual orientation as a lesbian.

Preferences

Likes: Japanese and Native Yuriban cuisine, energy drinks, working out, mahjongg, cards, money.

Dislikes: Forcefulness, overt promiscuity, school, food that is too fatty, clothing that makes her look frumpy, uninvited touches.

Other: People with 'blessings' make her apprehensive.

Background

The daughter of a restaurant owner in Tokyo and a former casino owner from Nevada, Miyabi grew up knowing she was different. As race is a distinguishing factor in Japan, Miyabi was often teased and sometimes outright shunned for being half-gaijin and from a low-income family. She learned very quickly the value of hard work, but due to her father's gambling problem after her mother passed away from a liver infection, she never seemed to have much money. What little she usually had was either from tips given to her by the patrons at the stir-fry restaurant her dad took over in her mother's absence, or from illicit mahjongg games in parlors or in private.

Miyabi tried several times to move out of the restaurant, but never made enough money to pay rent on her own. A brief stay in a mahjongg house owned by an eccentric professor gained her a couple of friends, but after a certain man came along to become the first to ever outmatch her at the game, she left the place in disgust. Believing, however, that this person could probably be a compatible match for her, she found herself in an odd rivalry with her new friend Rumi for his attentions for a year, until in the end he chose to build a relationship with Rumi instead.

Miyabi had little time to feel used or upset, as the very next day, the bill collectors and hired Yakuza thugs from several credit card companies broke down the door to the restaurant demanding to see her father. Miyabi fled to a harbor for her own safety, and knowing she'd never be safe in Japan, she decided to steal the first boat she could find, blindly putting the engine to use to get her away from her home country.

Unfortunately, the engine sputtered and died several miles off of the coast, and for two days Miyabi drifted in the Pacific, living off of what little there was in the boat. She didn't think to question where she was when her boat made land on an island sometime during the night of the second day, until, after taking her handbag and pack, and the last bottle of water from the boat and setting out to scout the island, she turned back around to make sure she had gotten all she needed. Only to find that the boat had disappeared. Unaware of where she had drifted, Miyabi had no idea that she had crossed into the threshold of the pocket dimension that surrounds the island of Yuriba.

Miyabi's immersion into Yuriban culture has been an awkward one. Growing up in a place where female-female relationships were seen as either a phase or signs of a mental disease, not to mention the cultural norm of suppressing emotion in public, Miyabi had a lot to adjust to in her first days on the isle, and not just the climate. She had always had a latent attraction to other females, but being openly propositioned, or even complimented, by them out of the blue was indeed something new to her. To say nothing, of course, of the various races of people on the island that she had previously thought only existed in books or manga.

Despite this, it was a pretty country, and quite a relaxing place in comparison to being woken up at 6 AM nearly every morning by bill collectors banging on the door. Eventually, Miyabi warmed up to the idea of staying in the village, even going so far as to make a few friends. Within her first week on the isle, she acquired employment and enrolled at Rinkei Gakuen to finish her thus far unimpressive education, and now believes she is beginning to make her way in the world, or at least part of it.

After finishing her education and receiving a degree in the liberal arts, Miyabi spent some time secluded from the rest of the island. She didn't show up at the Ocean Lily at all, and had no plans to continue waiting tables for the rest of her life. Instead, the last time she was seen outside her apartment, it was with what wealth she had amassed, a portfolio of fashion shots, and a job offer from a prestigious Tokyo modeling agency. Miyabi left Yuriba in November of 2009, secure in her new-found sexuality and with higher hopes for the future. The Sprinkle Star Arcade closed its doors after its brief run in her absence. Her only memento left behind was for her friend Mirabelle: a mahjongg table and tile set.

Abilities

Miyabi is incredibly strong, particularly for someone of her build. She doesn't know her maximum bench, but at last attempt successfully bench-pressed 320 pounds in the Yuriba Gym. She has no formal martial arts training, however, never having been able to afford lessons; lots of inadvertent practice has allowed her to perfect a solid uppercut and kick, though these are rarely seen.

Deficiencies

Miyabi can't cook. At all. She is capable of mixing a simple drink, heating instant ramen noodles, or making a cup of coffee well enough, but anything that requires more than adding hot water and serving otherwise spells disaster for the kitchen and anyone dumb enough to actually want to eat the finished "product". She admits this openly, however, and as a general rule doesn't go anywhere near the Ocean Lily's kitchen. Offers have been made to improve this, but she politely turns them down each time in favor of the other person's safety.

Relationships

Miyabi established a quirky friendship with a school tutor and noted witch, Mirabelle O'Shea on her first day at school. The two of them often jib at one another playfully, but are usually looking after one another on school grounds or whenever they happen to be in the same place, which isn't often.

Not quite being ready to admit how attracted to other women she has become, Miyabi has made the acquaintance of two women on the isle who, for simplicity's sake, are referred to as 'I dunno's. She met Fallon while taking a break at Leona's, attracting the other woman's attention simply by returning her wave, which she felt was only polite. A series of circumstances involving Fallon partaking of the Oysters Yuriba and subsequently watching Miyabi work with... well, intent... led to a confession later in the week on Fallon's behalf of her attraction to the younger girl. At Abryn's recommendation, Fallon later treated Miyabi to the restaurant's Date Surprise, which led to an evening of relaxed if flushed discussion about the norms of the isle that Miyabi would normally not speak of, and subsequently what Aya told Abryn to be 'the sweetest, longest, most romantic kiss in the history of the Ocean Lily'. Which was probably an exaggeration, but the fact the sun was setting behind the two girls when it happened must have played a role in that.

Her other 'I dunno' is the proprietor of the Yuriba Gym, Hi-chan. Their first meeting was a rather rocky one, which involved Hi softly chastising Miyabi for the way she was dressed at the time, and a following misunderstanding that led to Miyabi leaving the gym in a huff and refusing to speak to her. The two of them apparently made up the next day following a discussion in Hi-chan's office, though it is said there was a slight rivalry between the two for a time until after a 'friendly' game of dice. Miyabi indicates, albeit with a blush, Hi-chan as the woman who took her first kiss.

Miyabi's first employer, Emerlyn, has become a bit of a stranger since hiring her. Indeed, most of Miyabi's shifts in the lingerie shop have been worked alone, with only customers who wish to chat or get her opinion to break the monotony.

Her second employer, Abryn, however, met her a few times in Leona's before offering her a job at the Lily. In the brief time Miyabi has worked there when not at her job at Em's, she hasn't gotten to know much about her boss, but Abryn has been listening to her suggestions and recommendations on improving the place. An active worker at the Lily, she is most usually either just part of the background or an ever-present if unintentional* source of eye candy for those who visit.
