Marriage
Marriage is a social institution that is formalizes a romantic relationship. In Yuriba, marriage may be between any number of consenting individuals, and while most marriages are between two women, larger groups are not considered abnormal. There is no special legal, religious, or social status granted to married individuals in Yuriba, other than an heightened likelihood of others to assume that the relationship is permanent. While weddings may be performed as a religious ceremony, those that are merely a civil ceremony are considered equally valid, and the form and function of the ceremony is considered only that - ceremony. What is generally considered to be the vital components of marriage is only that all participants recognize and agree to be married.
In the same category, divorce, while rare, is not stigmatized either, and is simply seen as a formal dissolution of a relationship.
A wedding, a formal ceremony that marks the start of a marriage is common in many religions. Locally, religious traditions vary widely, even among different branches of the native faith, so there are a variety of wedding customs. Many immigrants opt for a western style wedding, typically marked by formal, elaborate white gowns and the exchange of vows and rings. Also popular are weddings in the formal kimono of Japan's celebration. Among the native goddesses, ceremonies are usually less formal, although there are many wedding traditions specific to particular goddesses, such as the use of veils for both brides in Akibimi's ceremonies, as well as a period of separation immediately before the ceremony.
