Mai Shiranui is a somewhat well known (at least according to her) ninja and competitor in the semi-regular King of Fighters tournament. Known for her general sense of exaggeration and excess, in her heart she is still rather playful and gets along well with others, assuming her mannerisms don't put you off too much, which for many they find particularly annoying.
History
Mai is Mai! And she's very much a Mai of her own making until she got over to here, so assume the Mai is how the Mai usually goes!
To which I will give my own addendum here.
She's not sure anymore. Not sure what she's after. Is it Andy? Or has she truly just been after him for the sake of being after him? Does he feel anything for her? Or has she pushed too hard one too many times? Fights come and fights go, but friendships are forever. Her pushing has finally taken her to the point where it has risked too many of her close friends. And she had to realize that, ultimately, some pushes are one too many. She had to cut herself off. And that wasn't the sort of thing that was done easily. So Mai had to leave what she had done for a long time, and leave to center herself and to stop her own obsessions then from ruining more than just her own dignity, but ruining her friendships and those she might call sisters as well. And so, after the latest tournament and her latest scheme to woo her would-be boyfriend had failed, she came to an island called Yuriba to find herself, and perhaps find something new as well.
Personality
Mai is flamboyant, and on the outside rather ditzy. She takes joy at life and living it, and seems to focus a bit too much most of the time on revelry. Openly friendly with all, Mai is only belligerent when one is rude. But otherwise she is very up front, playfully competitive, and well aware of herself and tends to take an openly simplistic view of things. Steadfastedly loyal and occasionally surreptitious, she is often flirty, even moreso when intoxicated, which she does easily. One might wonder then how the practictioner of Shiranui-ryuu Ninjutsu (Or Shiranui Style Ninja) could possibly be taken seriously, or even be a real ninja. But perhaps that's exactly her intent. To hide things in plain sight.
Inside, Mai is very serious, very friendly, but is very, very good at what she does. But she much prefers to be the Mai she is over on the outside than the one she often is on the inside, and push comes to shove she is quite happy with letting her facade be reality. Especially here on this wonderful island where she can relax and have fun and not have to worry about the consequences and just indulge a little. Or a lot. Hey, that's what bars are for!
