Jusenkyou Syndrome
Jusenkyou effects are cosmetic effects that depending on the nature of the spring cause changes in Yuriba's native and immigrant population. These effects include gaining and losing different animal characteristics such as ears and tails. It is completely possible to have the effects of the Jusenkyou springs removed through a specific method. While the springs are not believed to cause personality change, it has been documented that both the form and the mental effects of using a spring tend to reflect upon the perceptions and beliefs of the user. For example, someone who sees Emoniichuan as an 'evil' demoness spring might act cruel or self-hating, while someone who associates it more with the native Mourning Bats is more likely to find themselves preferring nocturnal hours or become more aware of sounds.
Jusenkyou syndrome is a very rare side effect due to use of magical springs. While it is unknown what causes Jusenkyou syndrome, it has been attributed potentially to repeated exposure to Jusenkyou magic, infusion of Yuriba's natural magical ambiance to an individual from a non-magical world, or due to exceptionally high connection between a person and their Jusenkyou form. Further speculation on the cause of 'Jusenkyou Syndrome' involves the fact that many of those who have been found to display it are aligned very strongly with a certain goddess associated with the relevant spring; Cassidy, Lyra, and Nagisa Vendaris being key examples. Jusenkyou syndrome is even more rare in those not drawn to a specific goddess, but has been seen in multiple cases. The primary symptom of Jusenkyou syndrome is keeping characteristics of one's particular curse regardless of being under the conditions to change or finding themselves permanently locked into their new form. For example, an individual with a Maonyanniichuan curse might continue to have feline eyes despite being in her human form, or someone under the Shenyanniichuan effect requiring vast amounts of heat to stay active and healthy.
