Arai Hiromi is a former resident of Yuriba who lived on the island through late 2004. The daughter of a wealthy but traditional Sapporo family, she evidently made her way to Yuriba to enjoy a little time away from an often-turbulent Japanese life.

Character

When you get right down to it, Hiromi is a typical spoiled rich girl and, at least during her stay in Yuriba, could come across as both adorable and bratty. Given her diminutive height and naturally "cute" looks she does everything in her power to make herself look somewhat cherubic in the hopes of charming anyone she meets. She carries herself with a youthful energy and enthusiasm and is typically found with a warm, shining smile on her face. Generally Hiromi is cheery and optimistic, though in Yuriba that stemmed largely from being able to laze around and indulge herself with any number of attractive women of loose morality. Once outside the confines of her traditional Japanese upbringing - at which she chafes - there's very little she won't try once. She's fairly soft-hearted and tends to enjoy her quiet time with close friends and a bit of good food. Behind it all, though, she's deeply spoiled and doesn't deal with stress particularly well, and when she doesn't get her way or runs into some manner of hardships she tended - at least in Yuriba - to either complain, grumble or cry until she gets what she wants.

She has a fondness for fashion and in Yuriba could often be found in one of her several outsized kimonos, which she tended to let slip artfully off one shoulder in a completely contrived 'oops-isn't-that-cute' look. She tends to indulge in other little extravagances, wearing little bits of jewelry and almost always dunking herself in some manner of expensive perfume, favouring a particular strawberry scent.

Since leaving Yuriba Arai has matured considerably and is actually a productive member of Japanese society when she's not sitting on her family's immense chunk of change.

Relationships

In Yuriba, Hiromi was closest to Amber Mueller, whom she shared a somewhat extended romantic relationship with. She also took on a number of side lovers, not the least of them Nagisa Vendaris, Autumn, Lethe and a couple of others long since forgotten. She also enjoyed a close relationship - excessively so - with her sister Hitomi, who visited Yuriba briefly. Though she identified as polyamorous during her time in Yuriba and enjoyed "playing" with women who interested her at some level, she could frankly be most accurately described as shamelessly slutty and prone to being an easy lay.

History

Arai is the second-youngest of a set of pink-haired and undersized quintuplets - in order, the sisters are Hitomi, Harumi, Honami, Hiromi and Haruko. She's the daughter of electronics company executive Arai Norishige and his trophy wife, Arai Keiko. The daughters grew up in a huge house surrounded by ridiculous luxury accumulated by the family in the years since World War II. She and her sisters were waited on hand and foot by manservants and had basically everything five hyper little girls could ever want. They drove Keiko absolutely crazy, particularly with Norishige away most of the time plotting new electronic gizmos to spring on the world and new heaps of yen to rake in as a result. Most of the sisters eventually took on interests of their own, with Hiromi in particular becoming "the fashionable one," taking a strong interest in prettiness, style and impressing other girls. Though the family's lifestyle was in many ways traditional, Hiromi was accorded a lot of leeway and tended to grab for modern technology whenever she could. She realized she was a lesbian at a fairly young age but didn't catch a lot of flack for it, mostly because her parents were... otherwise occupied.

Her home life was abruptly rocked when she was 14 by something of a tragedy. Away from home so often, Norishige had begun availing himself of prostitutes to pass the time. Meanwhile, the quintuplets' mother, Keiko, fell into more or less the same trap when she began dallying with the valet. Eventually the spouses discovered their mutual betrayals when Keiko caught Norishige calling a phone sex line. A massive argument between the two broke out. Hiromi and another of the sisters, alerted by the screaming and the sound of thrown objects, tried to intervene, but Keiko blew them off furiously. Sometime later she fled the house and, in a fit of emotion, put a gun to her head and shot herself. From Hiromi's vantage point she saw only her mother screaming and hurling books at her father, and police carrying the body from the scene later. As such, her own wildly exaggerated retelling tends to boil down to "Mom went crazy and attacked us, then the cops shot her."

It took a long time for things to return to normalcy after that. Desperate for somewhere to turn, the quintuplets drew inward and relied largely on each other for emotional support. None of them are really over it to this day.

About four years later, an 18-year-old Hiromi ended up in Yuriba, in part to explore her lesbian leanings and in part because she wanted no part of a lifestyle that demanded increasing responsibilities of her. She promptly cut loose and practically hurled herself at just about anything with legs and breasts, sacking up most notoriously with Nagisa and the angel Faith before meeting her closest confidant, Amber Mueller - lamentably in a very physical encounter with another woman. The two developed a deep infatuation and began to cultivate a more emotional relationship, which peaked when Hiromi impulsively proposed marriage - though that never actually happened, as these things tended to go in the Yuriba of long, long ago. Her time in Yuriba reads as, essentially, a who's-who of the sexually available. She was so caught up in not having anyone looking over her shoulder that she dragged her sister Hitomi into the easy lifestyle during her brief visit to Yuriba.

Eventually Hiromi left Yuriba entirely, likely sometime in early 2005, after she got a call from her youngest and most sensible sister, Haruko, completely tearing her apart and putting her in her place for her bad behaviour. Thoroughly ashamed of herself, Hiromi returned home, wallowing in disgrace.

Where are they now?

After Yuriba, Hiromi finally came to grips with having to be a productive member of society. She swore off casual sex and decided to pursue her interest in fashion as a calling, making connections and building skills over the next six years. At 19 she finally grew a few inches and filled out. With work came a gradual maturing as she realized there was more to life than sex. Today she's an energetic, playful career woman with a winning smile and a quirky sense of humour, and she's working in Milan as an associate for a big design company, designing fancy women's dresses with a Japanese flavour. The odds of seeing her in Yuriba again are low, as she's ashamed of her behaviour while on the island and dreads returning to the scene of the crime.
