Cailyn Kwan
OOC: Clarification |
This character entry also refers to the NPC who serves as the bartender at The Labrys. The entry predates that NPC's creation and exists because Cailyn was at one time a player character. |
Cailyn Rose Kwan is a young woman residing until recently in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She arrived in Yuriba on November 1, 2007, by sheer coincidence, appearing at Phantasm Harbour with most of her possessions. She is an outgoing and somewhat daring person with a buoyant, optimistic character.

Psychological data
General personality
Kwan is an outgoing sort of woman, the type who loves a good challenge and a good adventure. While not exactly carefree, she is an optimist and tends to try and make the best of things. She believes that there is little point in moping over the bad things in life. She is unfond of excessive formality and functions best when surrounded by only a loose structure of rules, as she prefers to be able to stretch her imagination. Her mannerisms are casual and laid-back, though she has strong inclinations towards mischief and playfulness, and she often comes across as a tease. Cailyn has a history as a troublemaker: she enjoys getting herself into mischief every once in awhile, and she will often test the boundaries set around her just for the sake of doing so. Her sense of humour is fairly well-developed; she laughs often. It is very rare to see Kwan involved in drama, as she tends to cut herself off from tense situations by retreating to collect her thoughts and let her temper cool.
Kwan is of average intelligence compared to most of her peers, but she is extremely perceptive and worldly. Though she scored rather poorly in school and was unable to attend post-secondary studies, her understanding of people and the world is great.
She is a fluent speaker of English, French, and Korean. Occasionally, French and Korean words may find their way into her speech. Her English is not accented.
Kwan was raised in a secular household and identifies as simply "non-religious." She believes that there is a supreme entity out there somewhere, but she believes that the entity does not interfere with human life. She looks upon organized religion and customs with disdain and considers faith to be the last refuge of the insecure.
Romantic preferences
Kwan identifies as monogamous only within the context of a committed relationship. She is usually quite disinterested in long-term relationships, however, and is thus in practice a dedicated casual dater. She prefers the freedom to date and flirt as she pleases and dislikes the idea of being bound to one person for a lifetime. This is not, however, to say that she is indiscreet; Kwan prefers not to sleep around a great deal and will not date people she perceives as being overly interested in sex. She has claimed that her golden rule of dating is "If they put out on the first or second date, they're probably not worth my affection."
As a rule she is more interested in teasing and flirting than she is in sex.
Hobbies, skills, and employment
Kwan has a great affinity for animals. Her constant companion is her faithful dog, a three-year-old American Eskimo Dog named Percy; despite the name, the dog is female. She has owned dogs ever since the age of three and claims that she can't imagine life without a dog around.
She is a strong swimmer and a fast runner, having joined both the swimming and track-and-field teams during her high school days, seeing more success in the former than the latter. Despite her lack of book smarts she has been absorbed into some of the "geeky" hobbies of her close friends: she plays Dungeons & Dragons, and she is an avid player of computer games, though being in Yuriba has deprived her of the latter. She enjoys photography and dancing; she practiced the latter professionally, working as an exotic dancer in Toronto before ending up in Yuriba. She is, in addition, a fairly good guitarist, and she can paint with modest skill.
For the moment Kwan is unemployed, though she is interested in becoming a contributing member of Yuriban society.
Relations
Kwan shares a very deep friendship with Rae-Anne Anderson. The two grew up together and later roomed together in Toronto, and they consider themselves best friends for life. She has also struck up a friendship with Miyako Tanaka, whom she had until recently only heard about through Rae. She's also grown very close to Nicki, having developed a strong friendship with the young woman.
History
Kwan was born in Kitchener, Ontario, to a family of mixed ancestry. Her father, Im Yong "David" Kwan, is Korean, and her mother, Susan (nee Madigan), comes from an Irish family with a touch of Mississauga Indian blood. Her mixed heritage accounts for her exotic appearance. Despite having a few distant Indian relatives she is not considered a legal Indian.
Her family moved to London, Ontario when she was only two years old; she scarcely remembers the city she was born in. During her early elementary school years she became somewhat popular due to her outgoing demeanor. Among her classmates was future Yuriban Rachel Anderson, whom she initially bullied, but befriended a few years down the line. The two would become close friends throughout their grade school years, acting as study partners for each other. Beyond that, Cailyn was fairly popular among her peers and enjoyed a busy social life, though she was never a particularly good student. She could often be found daydreaming in class, and she was frequently late coming in from outside for her next classes. Her teachers considered her a bit of a troublemaker. When Rae graduated a year before her and went off to Japan to learn at the St. Agnes Academy for Girls, Cailyn wrote letters to her frequently, the two acting as pen pals to each other.
With her best friend absent throughout high school, Cailyn was left without a major moderating influence and became somewhat more of a problem student in high school. She often slept in class, scribbled in school-owned textbooks, and skipped out on classes, choosing instead to spend her time in leisure activities - learning to play the guitar, mainly. She found herself a job fairly early, initially working at a local Burger King before moving up to lifeguarding at a local swimming pool, taking advantage of her interest in swimming. Cailyn did graduate high school, but certainly not with honours; her teachers were, frankly, glad to be rid of her. Also during this period Cailyn began to explore her romantic life; she dated a boy two years older than her for several months, left him, and began to realize that her preferences were somewhat broader. She soon came out to her close friend Robin Tyler, the lone heterosexual in the Rae-Robin-Cailyn clique.
She lacked the grades to make it into a good university, but after clashing with her parents over her desire for more space, she hopped into her newly-purchased used car and traveled to Toronto, having arranged to stay with the newly-returned Rae. The two moved into an apartment together, acting as roommates rather than lovers. While Rae focused on her schooling at the University of Toronto, Cailyn sought a well-paying job to support the duo. She and her friend ended up working together in an office.
A few weeks later, Rae left Toronto and vanished from the world map, leaving Cailyn to make her own way in the world. Seeking more money with which to build herself a solid future, she applied for a job at a local club. Not long later she began working with great success as a dancer, bringing in a great deal of money. She tucked most of it away, planning to eventually build a better life for herself. Despite the nature of the profession she took pride in being a showperson rather than anything less savoury. After a year and a half or so she moved beyond her job as a mere dancer, first bartending for a few months, then using her connections to look into managing a club of her own. However, before the deal could go through, she found herself in Yuriba.
Thus far her experience on the island has been limited. She has reunited with Rae and finally met her best friend's adoptive sister, and she currently stays in one of the rooms at the Crimson Rose and Sword, mainly because Rae's cat and Cailyn's dog did not get along well.
After going AWOL for some time and returning to Canada, Cailyn resurfaced in Yuriba in 2011 as the bartender at The Labrys.
